What is aeration and how is it done?

Aeration is a process of removing plugs from you lawn which gives your lawn’s roots easier access to the water, oxygen, and nutrients in the soil that the lawn needs to thrive. As you can see in the picture below, we use a machine that has hollow tines which is pulls small (3″x 3/8″) plugs of soil, thatch, and grass out of your lawn. You can expect 9-12 holes per square foot of turf. The plugs will then decompose over a period of about two weeks.

So, why should I aerate annually?

In Cincinnati & Dayton our soils contain high amounts of clay. If not aerated annually, the soil in our lawns can become extremely compacted and as a result of this restricts your lawn’s root system from absorbing organic nutrients and food in the soil, and water and oxygen on the surface of your lawn. If your lawn has to work harder to get these vital ingredients for growth it becomes weak and more prone to drought, harmful insects, and disease.
